The honest YNAB alternative comparison (for people who don't want bank sync)
Last updated: 24 July 2026
YNAB is genuinely good software with a genuinely devoted following — if you want automated bank imports and don't mind $109/yr, stop reading and use YNAB.
This page is for the other group: people who like zero-based/envelope budgeting but hit one of two walls — the price ($109/yr and rising), or the mandatory bank connection (YNAB is built around linked accounts; a chunk of budgeters simply never want to hand over bank credentials, and manual-mode YNAB is fighting the tool).
The philosophical difference
YNAB automates awareness. Envelope-method purists argue the manual entry is the mechanism — logging a $40 spend by hand is what makes it hurt, and the hurt is what changes behaviour. Tuck sides with the purists, then spends its premium tier killing only the tedious parts (recurring bills auto-fill, CSV catch-up) — never the awareness.
